QUESTION: Does drinking lot of water make one grow fat?

ANSWER: No, water does not contain any calories so it cannot make you fat. If you drink a lot of water, your body will take what it needs and excrete (remove) the excess through urine and sweat.

QUESTION: Can you please give me some tips on how to gain some weight? I am underweight.

ANSWER: Please click on our “Nutrition and Disease” link and read our nutrition information sheet on “Gaining Weight the Healthy Way”.

QUESTION: Would you in future recommend the size of kenkey, fingers of plantain etc. which a diabetic can consume at a time?
ANSWER: Specific diet prescriptions can only be done when a comprehensive diet history of the patient, as well as an assessment of body weight and other co-existing disease conditions (if any) have been taken into consideration. This is best done in a face-to-face consultation in a dietitian’s office.

QUESTION: I thought fruit, and for that matter their juice is very good. Now they are bad?

ANSWER: No they aren’t necessarily bad. Firstly, real fruit is preferable to fruit juice. They have more fiber, more nutrients and relatively less calories. Fruit juice has no fiber, contains sugar (doesn’t matter whether it is artificial or natural, the value is the same) which is readily available to your body, and can promote dental caries. Secondly quantities count here. Anything you eat (even fruit) in excess of your bodies requirements can contribute to unnecessary weight gain. Fruit juice is even worse in this regard (they can be really high in calories). Many people don’t consider it as food and hence tend to drink it in large quantities.
